Illegal lottery causing problems for legal lottery
WILLEMSTAD – The introduction of sales tax to the lotteries of the Fundashon Wega di Number Korsou (FWNK) is, according to the Minister of Economic Development, the cause of the increase in the sales of illegal lottery tickets. In 2014, the FWNK sold 35 million guilders in lottery tickets while this was 60 million in 2010.
“According to the licensees, the reason for the decline in sales, is the introduction of sales tax. That makes it more attractive for people to try their luck at an illegal minimarket rather than a legal lottery office. People would rather pay one guilder than 1.13 for the same prize they can win,” said Palm.
