‘In order to realize economic development, you have to affect the environment here and there’

Steven MartinaWILLEMSTAD - Minister of Economic Development Steven Martina sees, despite the heavy criticism, the development of the Jan Thiel area still as positive.

According to the Minister, there is still a need for hotels in Curaçao and it is not logical that a developer will invest in this if the market is saturated. According to Martina, the Papagayo group has shown that they can offer the quality to attract tourists; the Holiday Beach Hotel, which is currently in a very bad financial situation was not able to do so

“No investments have been made or no modernization for years and then you will not make it in the world of tourism where quality is expected. Such a location cannot be compared with what the beautiful hotel complex that will be constructed there,” said the Minister.

Martina emphasizes that the balance between the environment and the economy is monitored and the government is constantly monitoring this. The plan must fall within the boundaries of the Island Development Plan (EOP). “In order to realize economic development, you have to affect the environment here and there. This is happening worldwide, but it has to be done in a controlled and balanced manner and there are resources for it.”
