Minister of Economic Development to promote agricultural sector
WILLEMSTAD - The Minister of Economic Development wants to encourage the economic strength of the agricultural sector. This will not only give a boost to the economy, but consumers can also choose to go more for locally grown produce.
On October 22, 2016, the Konferensha Agrario took place where participants discussed the future of the agricultural sector.
The Minister of Economic Development welcomes the fact that the agricultural sector is in constant development. The industry is not that big yet in Curaçao, about 0.5% of GDP. “It could give a boost to our economy if the sector is more robust. A larger contribution of this sector means an increase in the well-being and health of the population. Locally grown agricultural products have less impact on the environment. And innovative methods can produce more organic varieties also. Then the consumer, including catering establishments, have even more choice,” said the Minister.
The Minister of Economic Development will examine whether and how knowledge of the Wageningen University in the Netherlands can be made available for the agricultural sector in Curaçao.
The University is renowned for its knowledge of the agricultural sector. “As Curaçao, we can also make good use of the knowledge within the Kingdom.”
One of the demands that came out of the conference is to organize a Democratic Dialogue. The Economic Development Ministry will undertake the organization of such a meeting. The Ministry will also take into account the Minister’s vision to stimulate the economic strength of the agricultural sector.
