Palm: Government unaware conclusions economic summit

de palmWILLEMSTAD - The government has not been informed and has no knowledge of a final statement of conclusions which was signed at the end of the economic summit that was held on June 25. This is according to the Minister of Economic Development, Stanley Palm in response to questions from PAR MP Armin Konket.

According to Palm, he has been invited to provide information about the economic situation in accordance with the presentation that he gave earlier in Parliament.

I have fulfilled this request and then I left,” said Palm.

According to Konket, it is not usual that a summit on economic policy is held, while the government is not present. Only the government is authorized to represent the country and to compromise, he says.

He calls it remarkable that representatives of the commercial sector come to an agreement whereby the government's involvement is required in connection with the formulation and implementation of a policy, but that the government itself is not present.

What Konket also find remarkable is that a number of MPs participated actively in the economic summit on June 25 and have committed themselves to the formulation and implementation of policy aspects, while this is not their competence.

Konket also notes that after the summit, the government still has not ratified the conclusions and agreements made during the summit.

Reality is that a summit without ratification by the Council of Ministers is no more than a discussion between a number of entrepreneurs and politicians.”
