Unemployment on Curacao remains the same

WILLEMSTAD - Unemployment on Curacao is almost unchanged compared with October 2009. This is shown by results of the Labour Force Survey (AKO) of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), which were performed last year in September and October.

The unemployment rate rose by only 0.2 percent. In 2009 this was namely 9.6 percent, in October 2011, the percentage was of 9.8 percent. Around 6,700 people are looking for a job. This number is thus increased by 400 compared to 2009. The situation of youth labor and youth unemployment remain unchanged: nearly 25 percent of young people between 15 and 24 years does not work.

The AKO included a sample survey in different households in Curaçao, with the aim to measure developments in the labor market. The figures are in addition to unemployment, also about participation, the size of the working population and the size of the job seeker population. The measurements are the result of developments between October 2009 and October 2011.

Population and employment
Curacao has about 2100 inhabitants of fifteen years and older richer compared to 2009. The results of the AKO shows that this increase has been of benefit to the workforce. This only increased by 4.5 percent to 68,700 persons. The overall participation rate, or the proportion of the labor force to total population increased from 44.9 to 46.5 percent. A slightly larger part of the total population is now at work.
