Breaking News: Former Prime Minister arrested

SchotteWILLEMSTAD – Former Prime Minister of Curacao, Gerrit Schotte was arrested this morning after he gave an interview at CBA TV.

The exact reason for the arrest is still unknown. There is a criminal investigation ongoing since the declaration of a civil movement on dubious financial transactions by the politician.

Schotte is suspected of money laundering and forgery. There were several house searches held on the island at the dnd of 2013. For example, a search was done in Schotte’s house, his party office and parliament office.

Immediately after the raids, there was speculation in the media about a connection with the investigation into the murder of politician Helmin Wiels. According to the prosecution the searches did not have anything to do with the Wiels case.

Earlier, the prosecution began a so-called civil inquiry against the policies that Schotte led as prime minister. That case is still pending.

Schotte was Prime Minister from 2010 to 2012. With his policy he made great changes in the political balance of power in Curacao.
