Curaçao stay-over visitor arrivals generates 401.4 million US Dollars in 2013

curacao-willemstadWILLEMSTAD (CTB) -- According to the ‘Turistika Model’, CTB research department together with MEO calculated that during the year 2013 the tourism sector generated in total 401.4 million US dollars.

The year 2012 generated a total of 376.7 million US dollars. European stay-over visitors, who visited Curaçao in greatest numbers during the year 2013, spent a total 174.6 million US dollars, about 43% of the total. They were followed by the South Americans who spent 113.9 million US dollars and the North Americans who spent 74.3 million US dollars. The Caribbean visitors spent a total of 25.6 million US dollars in 2013.

All together 440.714 stay-over visitors were welcomed during the year 2013. This is a 5% increase in visitor arrivals compared to 2012. In 2012 Curaçao welcomed 420.868 stay-over visitors. The European region welcomed 175.607 visitors in 2013 compared to 175.161 in 2012 recording a flat growth (0%). The South American region increased by 10%. There were 135,773 in 2013 compared to the 123.490 visitors registered in 2012. The North American region decreased by 1% during 2013. A total of 71.228 visitors from this region are registered. The Caribbean region decreased by 3%, during the year 2013 we welcomed 38.936 visitors from our neighbor Islands.

The share of the top 5 markets to Curaçao was in 2013 The Netherlands (30.0%), Venezuela (20.9%), United States of America (14.0%), Aruba (4.5%) and Germany (4.0%). In absolute figures the top 5 markets registered 131.995, 92.256, 61.627, 20.041 and 17.604 stay-over visitors in 2013.

The overall nights spent on the island increased by 2%. All together stay over tourists spent 3.750.631 nights in Curaçao during the year 2013. The North American region decreased by 4% during the year 2013 in visitor’s nights. The South American region increased by 8%. The Caribbean region decreased by 3% during this period. From the European region we registered 2% less visitor’s nights.

During the year 2013, 33% of the visitors stayed at a local address (street names). 32% of the visitors stayed in a large hotel (+150 rooms). 14% of the visitors stayed at a bungalow and another 14% at a small hotel. 5% stayed at a registered apartment accommodation.

Preliminary Figures November 2013

The preliminary visitor statistics gathered by the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) show that 38.577 stay-over visitors arrived to the Island of Curaçao in November 2013. The stay-over arrival figures for the month November 2013 are 9% more than the arrival figures recorded for the same month last year. In 2012 CTB recorded 35.467 visitors in November 2012.

The European market recorded a 20% increase in November 2013. The market provided a total of 15.127 visitors compared to the 12.637 recorded in November 2012. The main visitor producing country, The Netherlands increased by 13% with 10.750 stay over visitors in November 2013 compared to 9.489 in 2012. Germany grew recording 29% more visitors in November 2013. A total of 1.970 visitors were welcomed. In 2012 this same month recorded 1.528 German visitors.

The South American market increased by 11% in November 2013, with a total of 13.983 visitor arrivals compared to 12.622 in 2012. From Venezuela a total of 10.737 visitors were registered during November 2013. This is an 18% increase from Venezuela. Brazil registered an increase of 54% in visitor arrivals.

In absolute figures the secondary country in South America registered 895 visitor arrivals. Suriname and Colombia registered a decrease in arrivals of respectively 15% and 30% less visitors than November 2012.

Arrivals from North America decreased by 15% in November 2013 with a total of 4.639 visitors compared to the 5.467 in November 2012. The United States with 3,998 visitor arrivals recorded a 14% decrease. Canada recorded a 23% decrease with 641 visitor arrivals in November 2013.

Stay over visitors to Curaçao from the Caribbean region decreased by 10% in November 2013. A total of 3,464 visitors are registered. Aruba registered a decrease of 15%. In 2013 1,762 arrivals are recorded from the neighbor island

Preliminary Figures December 2013

The visitor statistics gathered in December 2013 show that 40.138 stay-over visitors arrived to the Island of Curaçao. The visitor arrival figures for this month increased by 1%. In 2012 CTB recorded 39.873 stay-over visitors in December.

The European market recorded an increase of 6% in December 2013. The region provided a total of 15.078 stay-over arrivals in December 2013. The main visitor producing country, The Netherlands decreased by 1% with 10.969 in December 2013 compared to 11.094 in 2012. Germany increased by 44% in December 2013. A total of 1.347 German visitors are registered in December 2013. In 2012 we registered 933 visitors from Germany.

The South American market increased by 1% in December 2013, with a total of 13.803 stay over arrivals compared to 13.700 in 2012. From Venezuela a total of 9.825 visitors were registered during December 2013. This is a flat performance in arrivals (0%) from Venezuela. Brazil registered an increase in stay over arrivals recording 30% more visitors during the month December 2013. In absolute figures 1.324 Brazilians were welcomed. Colombia and Suriname registered a decrease of respectively 4% and 24% in stay-over arrivals.

Visitor arrivals from North America decreased by 14% in December 2013 with a total of 5.942 visitors compared to the 6.914 in December 2012. The United States with 4.567 stay over arrivals recorded a 16% decrease. Canada recorded a 5% decrease with 1.375 stay over arrivals this December 2013.

Stay over visitors to Curaçao from the Caribbean region decreased by 12% in December 2013. A total of 2.798 visitors are registered. Aruba registered a decrease of 14%. In December 2013, 1.546 stay-over arrivals are registered from Aruba.
