North American visitors grew by 32% in April 2015 – First four months of 2015 recording 11% growth
WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) is pleased to report another month of positive visitor arrivals for the tourism sector. 2% growth is registered in April 2015, recording in absolute numbers 36.280 visitor arrivals, which is in an additional 687 visitors in the fourth month of the year. Last year 35.593 visitors were registered.
The region that booked the best performance in April is North America, recording a 32% growth with a total of 7.207 visitors this year compared to 5.469 in April 2014. The United States with 5.329 stay over arrivals recorded a 31% increase. Nearly a quarter of the US visitors are New York residents. The information gathered from the Embarkation cards show that a total of 24.2% of all the US visitors are residing in New York. The next largest group is from the State of Florida (13.5%), followed by New Jersey (6.4%), California (5.3%) and Texas (3.7%). Canada recorded a 34% increase with 1.878 stay over arrivals this April 2015. This increase is directly attributable to the weekly services from Toronto (West Jet, Air Canada and Sunwing). With the announcement of the year-round service from Toronto with Air Canada rouge the Curaçao Tourist Board forecasts further growth from Canada this year, where the first months of 2015 were already successful ones. In the effort to establish continued growthfrom this region, the combined marketing actions with partners in the tourism industry are set to book a significant improvement in the performance of the North American market.
The South American market recorded a slight 1% increase in April 2015, with a total of 8.807 stay over arrivals compared to 8.715 in 2014. After months of continued strong demand out of Venezuela, the CTB recorded a 7% decrease from the South American country. A total of 4.968 visitors were counted in April 2015, compared to the 5.319 visitor arrivals of last year. CTB applauds the elimination of the Colombian visa as per July 1st 2015. With the removal of the visa requirement the marketing efforts in Colombia should deliver better results. This month Colombia registered a flat growth of 0%. Brazil registered a decrease in stay over arrivals of e respectively 2% less visitors. In absolute figures Colombia and Brazil registered 904 and 806 stay over arrivals. Suriname registered 26% more visitors from the region, counting 1.401 visitors in absolute numbers.
The European market recorded a slight decrease of 1% in April 2015. The region provided a total of 16.008 stay over arrivals compared to the 16.106 recorded in April 2014. The main producing country, The Netherlands recorded a 4% increase with 12.096 in April 2015 compared to 11.642 in 2014. Germany decreased recording 25% less visitors in April 2015. A total of 1.448 visitors were registered. Last year this same month recorded 1.937 German visitors.
Visitor arrivals from the Caribbean islands recorded a 16% increase. A total of 3.193 visitor arrivals were counted in comparison with last year’s arrival total of 2.744 visitors. From Aruba a total of 1.679 visitors are registered, recording an 8% growth. The positive arrivals from Aruba are the direct effect of events held in Curaçao. In April the drag race event was the main reason Arubans traveled to Curaçao. Trinidad & Tobago also registered good performance with 98% growth. A total of 729 visitors are counted from Trinidad & Tobago.
