Moringa in Curacao

MoringaIn her article, “Moringa: The Ideal Food for Obese and Malnourished?” Dr. Monica G. Marcu, a Doctor of Pharmacy asks her readers “If I would tell you that science has discovered and characterized an amazing edible plant, loaded with most nutrients that we need what you wouldsay?”

Moringa (also known as the Drum Stick tree) is one of the world’s most exciting natural and nutritional plant and contains over 90 amazing nutrients!  Balbir S. Mathur, President of the Trees for Life foundation points out “nutritional analyses show that the leaves are very high in protein and contain all of the essential amino acids” and are “packed with essential vitamins and minerals – especially vitamins A and C.”

A Nutritional Treasure Throve

Put simply, on a gram for gram basis, studies show Moringa contains three times more potassium than bananas, three times more vitamin A than carrots, four times the calcium found in milk, seven times more vitamin C than oranges, and nine times the iron of spinach!  These tiny leaves have enormous benefits!

Noel Vietmeyer, from the US National Academy of Sciences, is a supporter of Moringa.  He states “Although few people have ever heard of it today, Moringa could soon become one the world’s most valuable plants, in humanitarian [read – nutritional] terms.”  It’s no surprise that organizations like UNICEF, UNESCO, US Agency for International Development, the Rotary Club, the National Geographic Society, the Food and Agricultural Organization, and the British Overseas Development Agency all are active in spreading the word on Moringa and its benefits.

A Healthier Curacao

There’s no question that there’s a serious need to improve to health of our island.  And one of the major problems in the availability of low cost and highly processed sugary drinks and fast food that are filled with chemicals, additives, preservatives, sugars, and calories.  Curacao’s Public Health Service (GGD) estimates that the number of diabetics in Curacao is now between 20,000 to 30,000 people.  Other health epidemics are also problematic such as obesity, and in one study it was noticed that “the prevalence of obesity in Curacao is alarming”!

The only solution is to improve our education and awareness of unhealthy activities and foods.  We need to implement solutions that encourage participation in physical activity and the consumption of healthier foods and beverages.  Perceptions must change and commitments must be made with an aim of a healthier tomorrow!
