All suspects in gold bar heist will stay behind bars for now

WILLEMSTAD – All suspects in the gold heist case will stay behind bars according to the court. Yesterday the court ruled that G.R. will get 30 more days behind bars pending more investigation.

Initially, the 6 suspects who saw their stay in prison being prolonged on January 16, 2013, appealed this court ruling. The court has already ruled in 5 cases that they will stay in prison. Last Monday the 6th suspect, appeared in court for his appeal against the judge’s ruling of prolonging his detention. During this hearing the court debates if there were personal reasons which are valid enough to suspend the detention of the suspect. Yesterday the court rejected this petition. The detention of the last suspect G.P. was prolonged on January 22.

On Friday November 30 around 4:30 am, masked men in jackets emblazoned with the word “police” boarded a fishing boat in Curacao and stole 70 gold bars worth an estimated $11.5 million. The boat’s captain was struck in the head in the early-morning assault before the thieves made off with the gold in three cars. Authorities believe there were at least six men involved in the heist. Up to now there were 7 arrests linked to this gold robbery.
