Curaçao Politicians knew murder plan Helmin Wiels

Helmin WielsWILLEMSTAD – Some Curaçao politicians would have been informed about the plan to murder the leader of the biggest party in Curaçao, Helmin Wiels. Politicians and criminals maintained close links with each other according to an investigation by the Public Prosecutor (OM).

NRC Handelsblad has heard from anonymous sources that the prosecution has found strong indications that this is a fact.

Helmin Wiels was a left-wing populist politician and leader of the largest party in Curaçao, Pueblo Soberano. In May, he was assassinated on a beach in Willemstad. The prosecution has already investigated the murder.

The sources do not want to mention names of politicians involved and emphasize that the knowledge does not mean that these politicians have ordered the murder of Wiels.

It is clear who carried out the murder, according to the OM they are members of the street gang No Limit Soldiers from the Koraalspecht district of Willemstad.

The investigation pays particular attention to the relationship between Wiels and former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte, who was previously in a coalition with Wiels. Schotte would maintain relationships with an Italian mafia family and Robbie Dos Santos, a suspected money laundering gambling king.

Wiels and Schotte had a difficult relationship, but worked well together. Wiels decided not to go with Schotte and appointed transitional government after the elections in October 2012.

It is expected that more details about his relationship with politicians will come up in Dos Santos’ trial.
