Customs: Gold was legally imported

WILLEMSTAD – According to reports the gold that was stolen last Friday from a freighter in the harbor of Willemstad is probably from Suriname. So says the authorities in British Guiana, where the ship departed four days before. Customs has said this weekend that it was registered and thus a legal gold transportation.

The robbers wore jackets with "Police" on the back. Guards thought it was customs employees and therefore had let them through the gates. At the time of the robbery there were four crew members on board from Guyana. One of them was injured when a robber hit him in his face with a gun. In the raid the perpetrators seized 70 gold bars weighing 216 pounds. The gold is worth nine million euros. The cargo was en route to destination Miami. According to the local authorities, the perpetrators are still missing without a trace. They’ve only received some information but cannot share them with the public yet.
