Customs seized 156 kilos of cocaine in 2013

DrugsWILLEMSTAD - In 2013 customs at Hato Airport intercepted a total of 155.3 kilos of cocaine that was destined for export. This was reported by the Public Prosecution (OM) in their annual report. Most of the drugs (119.8 kilo) were destined for the Netherlands. The remaining 23.5 pounds were supposed to go to Germany.

39.1 kilos of marijuana were also confiscated at the airport, as well as seven pounds of hashish.


173 drug suspects were arrested last year at Hato. In 2012 this number was 231, in 2011, 339 in 2010 and 349 suspects were arrested. In 2009 there were 404. The number of suspects has been falling for several years. The decrease was 22 percent last year. According to the prosecution, the capacity of holding cells plays a role. In February 2012 the Police closed the detention center at Hato because of the unsanitary conditions.
