Fishing with harpoon is prohibited
WILLEMSTAD - The Rescue and Coordination Center (RCC) of the Caribbean Coastguard (KWCARIB) reported on April 12, that a number of people were spearfishing around the Piscaderabaai area.
A Coast Guard Patrol was immediately dispatched to that area and the officers saw a group of men fishing with harpoons / spear guns.
The moment the men saw the coastguard patrol they tried to get rid of the harpoons by throwing them in the water, but the Coast Guard officers found the harpoons in the water and another one in the trunk of a car that belonged to the men. The men also had a bag with harpooned fish.
The fish and spear guns were all seized and the men have all received a summons and have been also fined.
The Coast Guard would like to stress again that spearfishing or being in possession of a harpoon is illegal. If a person is found, the harpoons will always be confiscated and the person will receive a summons. In the coming period, the Coast Guard will be especially attentive to this problem.
