OM: Traffic death in November was under influence and did not wear a seat belt

Public ProsecutionWILLEMSTAD - Police Curaçao (KPC) and the Public Prosecution Service (OM) Curaçao deplore the traffic death on 22 November 2018. Despite additional efforts by the government to wear the belt, unnecessary deaths continue to occur because the seat belt is not used. Parents who let children sit in the care without this protection are also guilty.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is considering increasing the fine for not wearing the seat belt again in order to reduce the number of fatal accidents. The police have been asked to pay extra during traffic checks to children who are being transported in the car separately and without a seat belt. "It is time for change," says the Public Prosecutor responsible for traffic.

It has to make people even more aware that it is wrong not to protect your child with the seat belt. It is strange that parents have a seat belt and the children do not. Why do you protect yourself and you don’t do this for your child? The last fatal victim, unfortunately, did not wear a seat belt.

Police and OM will also continue to carry out alcohol checks and increase these. But behavior cannot be changed by the police and OM. It is a good thing that the introduction of the breathalyser has made its appearance this year and that people are becoming aware that driving with too much alcohol is a crime and it leads to a criminal record. Everyone has to take responsibility for drinks and parties, but also for young people who drink too much and get into the car.

The last fatal victim drove under the influence and came from a party. Wear your belt (and your children too) and do not drive under the influence. Please, think.
