Press release: KPC and OM Curaçao alcohol in traffic

PoliceWILLEMSTAD - KPC, KMar and OM / Paga Bo But held traffic checks in the night from Friday to Saturday, with the focus on alcohol in traffic.

The traffic check started shortly after midnight (at 00.20) in Santa Maria at Pizza Hut. 158 cars were checked during this inspection. During the check, 6 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol behind the wheel. They were transferred to the Rio Canario police station for a test. Excessive alcohol was detected on the street after using a breath test.

During this check, 16 drivers of motor vehicles received a fine. The fines were for the following facts:

  • Driving with expired insurance
  • Driving with unpaid vehicle tax
  • Driving without a driver’s license
  • Driving without a seat belt
  • Driving with tinted windows
  • Driving without the license plate on the front (as prescribed by law)

6 Vehicles were seized by the police, including 1 for driving without a license plate at the designated place on the car. This action was previously announced in the press and will be maintained for as long as necessary.

Around 3:00 am an alcohol check took place on the road to Bullenbaai. A military who drove under the influence of alcohol was arrested by the Dutch Royal Police. Also, two people were in possession of dealer quantities of drugs. These persons have been arrested by police.

Several motorists (35 in total) had used excessive alcohol. Due to lack of capacity and to prevent an arrest, these drivers were banned from driving and had to arrange a sober driver on the spot, because they were under the influence of alcohol to be able to continue driving. This means that a lot of people have been woken up to help people. A few who have not been helped by third parties on the spot had to spend the night. Everyone was held accountable for their reprehensible behavior.

The Public Prosecution and the police are alarmed to find out how many motorists get into the car at this time of day or get drunk. “If after a dance party 2 out of 3 drivers are detected under the influence of alcohol, there is something wrong with how people think they can handle alcohol in traffic. Further actions are appropriate,” according to the Public Prosecutor.

Driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages is a crime. There have been several cases in which the driver of a motor vehicle caused a collision under the influence of alcohol with fatal consequences.

The Public Prosecutor collected 1,900 guilders in outstanding fines during traffic inspections.
