The HNLMS Groningen seizes drugs once again
WILLEMSTAD - The HNLMS Groningen in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted 125 kilograms of hard drugs last week. The interception took place off the coast of Panama in international waters. This is the third drug interception for the HNLMS Groningen since she departed on June 5th to the Caribbean.
During a patrol flight of the NH90, the helicopter on board the HNLMS Groningen, a fast moving vessel with three (3) persons on board was observed. The vessel was moving towards the coast of Panama and had some bales on board. On the basis of this information, the fast interceptor boat (FRISC) of the HNLMS Groningen was launched to intercept this vessel. A U.S. Maritime patrol aircraft assisted in locating the vessel. After the vessel was stopped, no further contraband was observed onboard.
The NH90 helicopter together with a second FRISC from the HNLMS Groningen searched for additional contraband and located five (5) bales containing 125 kilograms of contraband. The crew of the boat and the drugs were transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard.
