Update: Former Director Giro Bank arrested
WILLEMSTAD – The former Director of the Giro Bank was arrested on July 20 in the afternoon at the Curaçao Airport. The 75-year-old Eric Garcia was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Cooperation Team (RST) on behalf of the Public Prosecution.
Garcia is suspected that he embezzled more than 10 million U.S. dollars in the settlement of a bankruptcy in which he was involved as one of the curators. Presumably, Garcia made use of forged documents during the settlement of the bankruptcy.
Following the arrest, the RST held two raids, one at Garcia’s house and one at his office in Groot Davelaar. The RST seized several items of interest for the investigation, including documents.
Garcia will now be in police custody and will likely be presented to a magistrate this Friday to review the legality of his arrest and detention. The RST will continue with its investigation.
