41 Cubans receive residence permit

Cubans protestWILLEMSTAD - The 41 Cubans who for more than eight years stayed illegally in Curacao will not have to leave the island. Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro signed a decree enabling them to get a residence permit.

The Cubans have been fighting for this permit for eight years now. Curacao law requires for an applicant to be in their own country when applying for a residence permit. The problem is that Cuba refuses to take back these 41 compatriots, which left them basically “country less”.

Despite promises that they could stay on Curacao a formal decision of the Minister failed to materialize. Until yesterday. The relief of the Cubans is great.
