56 confirmed Chikungunya cases

Chikungunya virusWILLEMSTAD - Despite the measures that are being taken to prevent the spread of the virus, the number of confirmed Chikungunya cases rose to 56. Furthermore, there is a total of 500 people suspected of carrying the virus. This is according to the Health Department epidemiologist.

The Health Department advises people to immediately report to their doctor if they feel symptoms similar to the dengue fever.

It is important to know that Chikungunya is characterized by an abrupt onset of fever frequently accompanied by joint pain. Other common signs and symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash. The joint pain is often very debilitating, but usually lasts for a few days or may be prolonged to weeks.

There is no medicine to treat chikungunya virus infection or disease. To decrease the symptoms you must get get plenty of rest, drink fluids to prevent dehydration and take medicines, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen, or paracetamol, to relieve fever and pain.
