Attack on reporter – a sad day for free press

Balentien's car

WILLEMSTAD – The car of the radio reporter, Richeron Balentien was set on fire last night. When the incident was discovered, witnesses saw articles around the car which could indicate that the car was deliberately set on fire.

Balentien’s neighbor was the first one to see the flames and tried to extinguish the fire, but to no avail. The neighbor also indicated that he heard a noise and when he looked out he saw an unknown man in the yard.

According to the reporter, his car was set on fire, because he is always reporting and denouncing critical issues in the community. “I don’t know where it came from or who did this, but it is striking that now that I have been reporting on the ‘Babel’ case, they would do this to me,” Balentien said referring to the investigation of former Prime Minister, Gerrit Schotte.

The owner of the radio where Balentien is employees was furious this morning as she condemned the act against her employee. This is not the first time one of her employees became the target of vicious attacks. At the beginning of this year it was radio reporter Cali Manuel, whose car was also set on fire.

Editor’s note: Gerrit Schotte spoke last night, shortly after his release from Barber, over Jachmin Pinedo and Radio Direct. This is because Richeron knew beforehand that Schotte would be arrested. A few hours later this happened.

Also last year Richeron’s car caught fire spontaneously while driving after he had reported about the letter to the minister of Italy for a certificate of good conduct from casino boss Francesco Corallo.

The media in Curacao are under attack, especially those who report negative news about Gerrit Schotte and his party.
