Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten: ‘Banknotes supply’

Bank notesWILLEMSTAD, PHILIPSBURG - The Centrale Bank van Curacao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) has received questions from the media in response to statements presumably made by the Minister of Finance of Sint Maarten, Mr. Michael Ferrier, with respect to a limited supply of banknotes for Curaçao and Sint Maarten.

The CBCS is the only institution legally authorized to issue banknotes and coins in the Countries of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, and to facilitate the circulation of money. In anticipation of the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on October 10, 2010, the necessary preparatory work had been done by the CBCS to introduce a new currency for the monetary union of Curaçao and Sint Maarten - the Caribbean guilder.

Currently, the CBCS is in discussion with the governments of Curaçao and Sint Maarten in order to reach an agreement on the implementation of a new currency for the two countries. Until a decision is taken by the governments, the current Netherlands Antillean guilder banknotes will remain in circulation.

Meanwhile, the CBCS ensures that it will continue to take care of having sufficient supply of banknotes to be able to meet the demand for banknotes at all times.
