CIBC FirstCaribbean In Curaçao Successfully Walked For Cure And Raised Both Funds And Awareness In The Fight Against Cancer

2013-1021-cw-CIBC-FirstCaribbean-Walk-for-Cure-2013-webWILLEMSTAD -- Employees, family and friends of CIBC FirstCaribbean in Curaçao last Sunday held the 2013 edition of the CIBC FirstCaribbean Walk for Cure through the streets of Willemstad in order to raise fund and awareness for the fight against Cancer.

This year’s walk was a culmination of various activities held catered to the bank’s employees and their family to raise funds and awareness for the cause.  The CIBC FirstCaribbean employees in Curaçao this way joined over 3,000 of CIBC FirstCaribbean colleagues in the 17 countries where CIBC FirstCaribbean operates all over the Caribbean in the fight against Cancer. Proceeds generated with the walk will be donated to the Prinses Wilhelmina Fonds.

CIBC FirstCaribbean first organized this Walk for the Cure last year, as part of its 10th anniversary activities. Its parent company in Canada, CIBC, is in its 17th year as the title sponsor for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, after which this series of events is fashioned. In 2012, 13,000 CIBC employees, their families and friends, took part in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure as part of Team CIBC. Team CIBC contributed over $3 million through the collection of pledges, fundraising events and contributions from the CIBC Pink Collection™ to the national total of over $30 million raised in 2012.

The CIBC FirstCaribbean team in Curaçao, walking up to the Walk for the Cure, raised awareness and funds through various internal activities catered to the employees of the bank and their family and friends.  One of the successful activities organized was the wear the jeans Friday during which employees wearing jeans on Friday also contributed with a small donation.  Other activities included breakfast, pasta lunch, local pastries and bake sale.  These activities were not only geared to raise funds but also to contribute in creating an awareness for the cause plus warming up of participation of employees, families and friends for the Walk for the Cure held last Sunday through the streets of Willemstad.

According to Mrs. Lorry van Oyen of the Stichting Prinses Wilhelmina Fonds: “We are very glad with the cooperation by the employees, families and friends of CIBC FirstCaribbean.  Our foundation appreciates efforts by companies to create awareness and support for this cause.”

CEO, Rik Parkhill, noted: “We are extremely pleased to be involved in another worthy cause to build awareness of a disease that impacts all of us. We know from the stories you have shared that the spectre of cancer touches all of us in some form, whether it’s a family member, friend or colleague, or the reality that some of us are afflicted by and bravely battling this disease. CIBC FirstCaribbean supports all efforts to raise the public’s awareness of all types of cancer, including early detection, treatment and the urgent need for a permanent cure. All of our efforts as part of our walk activities will therefore promote wider efforts to raise awareness.”
