Cost of HIV medication down from 3500 guilders to 350 guilders per month

hiv-testing-us-routine-practiceWILLEMSTAD – Curaçao has been able to reduce the cost for HIV/AIDS treatment by applying the special prices, which are valid for developing countries. If in the recent past patients infected with HIV cost 3500 guilders per month, now this is 350 guilders per month.

This is according to Dr. Cai Winkel, internist specialized in HIV during a special conference of the Fundashon Famia Plania.

“What is not good news is the new HIV cases, which have been registered during the last three years. The new cases in 2013 have reached the record number of 122 compared to 84 cases in 2011. This is not counting all those who are infected with the HIV virus and are unaware of it. Unfortunately, I get two to three new patients every week,” Dr. Winkel said.

With the aim to reduce the quantity of new HIV cases, this year a pilot project has started where a total of three medical consultancies were assigned to test all their patients for HIV.

It’s a simple test. According to Dr. Homan Jeung, this can be done through a simple saliva test which can be performed by the General Practitioner. The results can be known in about 20 minutes.

A second objective of this project is to decentralize the care of HIV patients and transfer this to the General Practitioners, who form the first line of health care.
