Cpost start pilot project with community mailboxes

CboxesWILLEMSTAD – Residents of neighborhoods Emmastad, Kwartier and surroundings will have to pick up their mail at the so-called community mailboxes (Cboxes) of the postal service Cpost International (Cpost) starting January 1 of next year. This is part of a pilot project of Cpost. Mail will no longer be delivered to the front door, but in central locations in neighborhoods on the island.

The introduction of Cboxes is motivated by the decreasing number of mail that must be delivered by the postal service. The financial problems of the company play a role in this decision. Minister Earl Balborda (Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning) announced recently in parliament that the postal service suffers a loss of 6.5 million guilders annually.

With the introduction of community mailboxes over the island, Cpost expects to save an amount of 4 million guilders. The concept of community mailboxes is not new. It was introduced earlier in Canada, but now also applies to the British Virgin Islands, Jamaica and Barbados.

In some of these islands, this system has been used for eight to nine years now. In the past period Cpost studied the introduction of this system in these islands. The Cboxes for the pilot project are located at the Post Office in Groot Kwartier.

Each address will have its own Cbox with a unique key. Mail is delivered once per day from Monday to Friday. Soon the Cbox will introduce a system whereby customers are informed by SMS, email or phone of new mail.

The person to whom the Cbox belongs can go any time of the day to pick up the mail. They can also choose to pick up the mail on a specific day.

The company guarantees the safety of Cboxes. The customer will be informed in writing about mail that does not fit into the Cboxes. The company stressed that the Cboxes are free.

An information session will be held on November 26 and 27 for the residents of Emmastad, Kwartier and surrounding areas. These will take place between 18.00 and 21.00 at the Post Office of Groot Kwartier.

In order to qualify for the key to a Cbox one must bring a valid ID, including two recent invoices of Aqualectra or UTS or bank statements to show that one does reside at that particular address.
