Customs will charge 400% on value undeclared merchandise as fine

Curacao AirportWILLEMSTAD – During the month of December of last year, the Customs of Curacao reminded travelers that when they arrive at the airport they have to declare their merchandise or if they have cash exceeding a certain amount. According to a Customs representative there are still many travelers who do not declare and who come with the story that they did not see the red line where they have the go through the inspection. Others say that they don’t know the meaning or the difference between the green and the red line when passing through Customs.

Customs is considering taking action and implementing the law in the next few weeks. The law indicates that all those who do not declare their merchandise of 200 guilders or more or cash surpassing twenty thousand guilders will be fined. This fine is 400% of the value of what was supposed to be declared.

To give a better service to travelers arriving in Curacao, Customs has decided to introduce the green and red line. The meaning is simple. The Green line is when a passenger has nothing to declare. Red line is when the passenger has something to declare. According to the Customs representative it is unimaginable that passengers do not know the meaning of these two lines, since it is done in many other countries in the world.
