Damage caused by heavy rain and end not yet in sight
WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is still struggling with heavy rainfall. In some places the damage is considerable. And the end seems not yet in sight; in the coming days, more rain will be expected.
West of the island has been considerably affected. Many places in Bándabou (western side) were flooded because the water could not drain. Recently there was, in the town of Soto, 136 millimetres of rain. Last Saturday during heavy rains broke the dam at Lagun. Much of the beach washed into the sea.
For the time being there seems to be no damage to homes, mainly the infrastructure is damaged. The total damage is estimated at tens of millions of guilders. The government does not have those funds available. This means that the recovery is dependent on the currently available funds. This might take a while.
