Development of the population of the island over 150 years (1863-2013)

Population developmentWILLEMSTAD –  The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) wants to congratulate the people of Curaçao on the occasion of the commemoration of 150 years of the abolition of slavery.

Following this commemoration the CBS wants to briefly describe the development of the population of Curaçao during these 150 years.

In the emancipation year (1863) the total population of Curacao consisted of 19,144 people. 150 years later, the population is six times larger with 152.760 people living on this island. Especially in the first 100 years (1960) after the abolition of slavery, the population grew enormously mainly by high immigration as a result of the establishment of the Oil Refinery Shell on the island in 1917. In the period 1960 - 2013 the population increased by only 20 percent.
