Dolphin Academy announces the birth of two strong healthy female calves

BAR-WILLEMSTAD - It is with great pleasure and pride that Dolphin Academy Curaçao announces the birth of two strong and healthy female calves.

Both calves had their first, critical month of life well spent. The first year is a challenging period, but survival odds for baby dolphins increase as the months pass.

The daughter of Kayena and Caiyo was born at 4 am on Saturday, September 17th. This birth is very special to Dolphin Academy since Kayena herself was born right here on November 18, 2007.

After careful thought, we have named Kayena's baby Estrea. Strea means star in the local language of Papiamentu. The E has been added to the word as a tribute to Estrea's grandmother Teresa. By putting the letters in a different sequence it forms the name Teresa, the mother of Kayena.

GeeGee has also given birth to a female calf at 8.10 am on Sunday, October 2nd. GeeGee has not only become a mother to our youngest dolphin family member but is also grandmother to dolphins Tulum and Sami.

We would like to share the top three names for the daughter of GeeGee and Caiyo, chosen by the 24/7 baby watchers and caretakers:

  1. Ixora (is a local flower on Curaçao);
  2. Djoli (means 'happy' in the local language Papiamentu);
  3. Zoya (means 'to cradle' in the local language Papiamentu).

Dolphin Academy is now looking for the number one name for GeeGee's calf. Cast your vote by sending an e-mail to info@dolphin-academy.com or via Facebook (www.facebook.com/dolphinacademycuracao).

Those of you who happen to have voted for the first-place name will be eligible for a drawing to see who will win a free dolphin encounter for their whole family (max. 6 persons). Votes can be sent until Wednesday, November 16th. The winning name will be announced on Friday, November 18th.

Maternity visits are every day from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm at Dolphin Academy. An entrance fee for the Curaçao Sea Aquarium is required to visit the newest family members and their mothers.
