Dutch Military Police investigates abuses Curaçao militia

militairy baseWILLEMSTAD – There is an ongoing investigation into possible abuses in the Curacao Militia at the Marine Barracks located in Suffisant. This was reported by the Public Prosecutor. Instructors from the local militia and students have committed abuses, threats and assaults against other students.

The students follow social education training at the barracks. There were video images, which have surfaced, showing students handcuffed on the ground, while being kicked and beaten. It also appeared that one of the students was sprayed with a fire hose under duress.

The commander of the naval barracks in Suffisant has filed a complaint. The Dutch Military Police (Marechaussee), which carries out the investigation, has interrogated three suspects. There are seven suspects in this investigation.
