Equal opportunities through free education

WILLEMSTAD – President of Parliament Mr. Ivar Asjes is very pleased that despite setbacks and delays, the free education on Curaçao is a fact. So says the President of Parliament in the context of the International Day of Literacy, which was celebrated last Saturday.

"By means of free education, all children and young people of Curaçao have equal opportunities to learn to read and write, study and develop without the depending on the financial situation of their parents," according to Asjes.

Day of Literacy
Last Saturday the International Literacy Day was again celebrated with the theme Literacy and Peace. The United Nations has declared this day in 1965 and the world celebrates now for more than 45 years the importance of literacy.

Necessity
"Literacy is a human necessity that everyone is entitled to, something that 60 years ago was recognized by the United Nations," according to Asjes. "Literacy helps eradicate poverty, child mortality, helps family planning, ensures equality, promotes respect among people and leads to sustainable development, democracy and peace."
