First steps in the fight against poverty are now a fact

povertyWILLEMSTAD - When they took office, the ministers of the Rhuggenaath Cabinet attached their fate to the fight against poverty in Curaçao. Four neighborhoods have been chosen as part of a plan where the government will do its utmost to improve the situation of the people living on the margins of society.

To achieve this, a gigantic preparation is needed. Various ministries must work together to come to an integral plan. There is no own budget for its implementation. The ministries, but also social organizations, have to make a financial contribution and there is an appeal to Reda Social or the Social Safety Net and the Crime Fund.

According to policy officer Lucy Thielen who is closely involved in the design of the plan, the first steps have been taken.

From each neighborhood twenty single mothers have been selected who participated in a special training ranging from home economics, budgeting to personal planning. They also learned how to find a job or start their own business with the objective to become self-sufficient.

According to Mrs. Thielen, a lot more has to be done but “you have to start somewhere.”
