Former Howard Johnson Hotel sold at auction

Howard-Johnson-Hotel-CasinoWILLEMSTAD – One of the hotels at the entrance of the harbor has been sold. The new owner of the former Howard Johnson Hotel is now the 33-year-old real estate developer Akash Soemeer. The entire complex was sold at auction for a mere 8.7 million guilders, almost 5 million dollars.

The new owner indicated that he had been interested in the hotel for quite some time now and was even present at the previous auction. But since there was no bid, he did not go for it. He hoped that the price would drop. And it did. It went from 9.5 million to 8.5 million guilders.

Not only the location is attractive but also the combination of hotel and commercial units on the ground floor. Soemeer says that he believes in this mix. He uses this concept in his other real estate activities, like the properties he owns at Rio Canario, Winston Churchillweg and the Rooseveltweg.

Soemeer hopes to be able to open in a month or two. But first, there is some work to be done. “The hotel has stood still for a long time. Because of the heat, the tiles have all broken loose, so we must at least start to renovate. And we would like to put the rooms in a slightly more modern look. The interior is now very old-fashioned. "

In the course of January, the new owner hopes to have a better picture of the possibilities in the short term. “Then I hope to know if we can start with several rooms, or maybe everything at once. And then I can also estimate how much staff we need to be able to run the hotel, with almost eighty rooms.”

The real estate man was born on Suriname but has been living in Curaçao for more than 26 years.
