Generic drugs must be registered more quickly and be prescribed more

Peter-van-LeeuwenWILLEMSTAD - Cheap generic medicines should be registered more quickly, more should be used by the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) and more should be prescribed by a doctor. This is according to Peter van Leeuwen of Budget Farm in response to statements from Jan Huurman, Inspector General for Healthcare. Budget Farm only imports generic medicines.

Huurman says that the health care in Curaçao is too expensive and that this is partly due to the use of brand medicines instead of generic medicines. These brandless drugs have the same effect but are a lot cheaper.

Van Leeuwen thinks that the registration of new generic medicines takes too long and thinks that the Medicines Registration Committee should be faster in doing this.

Importers of medicines also continue to import branded medicines while generic medicines are also available. According to Van Leeuwen, higher profits can be achieved here.
