Government turns in austerity plan

WILLEMSTAD – The outgoing Government has turned in an austerity plan with the Committee of Financial Supervision (Cft). This was confirmed by a spokesman of the Committee today. Curaçao is under receivership and had until September 1, the time to come up with 153 million Antillean guilders to balance the budget.

The Committee will come next week with an opinion for the Government of Curacao about its austerity plan. They will also inform the Kingdom Council of Ministers before September 14. A spokesman for the Ministry of Kingdom Affairs indicated that they will also be talking about the budget amendment, to see if it is ”convincing and properly."

Hundreds of pages
"We will now assess the whole package," says the Cft-spokesman. "There are hundreds of pages. We look at what the changes will do with the economic growth and health care expenses. " About the contents of the report, the spokesman would not comment on that yet.

153 million
Minister of Kingdom Affairs, Mrs. Liesbeth Spies (CDA) urged the island last week to speed up the reforms. The deficit this year amounts to 55 million Antillean guilders. Along with deficits from previous years it comes to a total deficit of 153 million guilders.
