Luxurious Rehab Clinic Jellinek Retreat in Curaçao Shut Down

Jellinek RetreatWILLEMSTAD – Dutch Caribbean Business reports that the luxurious rehab clinic Jellinek Retreat in Curaçao has been shut down. The retreats demise is caused by the Dutch health insurance not willing to reimburse patients for the very expensive treatments. In addition well to do patients seem not wiling to pay for treatments out of their own pockets.

The Jellinek Retreat in Curaçao was known for its catering mostly to patients from the Netherlands, who preferred to be treated overseas, away from the glaring public eye at home. Treatments were interspersed with physical activities like cycling, golf, beach walks, group discussions as well as  psychological assistance.

The resort had been under heavy fire in the Netherlands, since its opening in 2010. Reasons being the 600 thousand EURO subsidy received by the initiators as well as the high price tag per treatment. An average stay would run up to 14 thousand EUROS, refunded by Dutch health insurance. The Dutch health services are now pulling back.

In addition, the retreat failed to make good on its promise to also offer aid to local addicts. Detoxification remained largely reserved for wealthy Dutch, many of them celebrities, ranging from doctors to media figures. "That they want to de-stress and engage in horse riding is fine," said one insurer. "but not at the expense of the insurance funds which are co-financed by everyone."
