MCB Price awarded to Jewel Investment and Management Group

WILLEMSTAD – As the motor behind the development of Pietermaai Smal Jewel Investment and Management Group Inc was awarded the Maduro and Curiel’s Bank (MCB) Price.

Jewel Investment and Management Group was rewarded yesterday by Maduro & Curiel's Bank for its positive contribution to the economy. Chicu Capriles, Director of MCB: “I thank you on behalf of Curacao for bringing new life in Pietermaai Smal. You have brought this special part of our town back to life and have rescued a large part of our monuments many of whom we thought were lost forever,’ said Capriles. “At the same time you have helped developed our economy, and in particular Petermaai Smal. You have changed a deserted area which was surrounded by “chollers” (homeless) and drug addicts. You have “put your money where your mouth is”. The MCB-Price is since 1997 awarded annually to a person, event or organization with a large positive contribution during that year.

Ten years ago, Jewel Investment and Management Group started to invest in Pietermaai Smal, an area that was practically deserted with little life. An area which was a pride for our elderly, but that was turned into an area where it was too dangerous to live. MCB congratulates the people of the investment group for their commitment for the monuments that they wanted to invest in old buildings in Pietermaai Smal. They were restored and new business were housed in them. “They have designed new buildings in which civilians, interns and tourists were encouraged to live in these building and has led them to rebuilding their lives in Pietermaai Smal,” according to MCB.

Cafes, restaurants, inns and offices have helped to bring new life into Pietermaai, both during the day and evening. All this has helped to combat poverty there and the creation of jobs in both the construction industry as well as in the catering and other sectors.

“Once again congratulations to Jan Peltenburg, Annemarieke Holten and Wilfred Hendriksen. Also your committed has contributed so that the people of Curacao can say that Willemstad has been shining on UNESCO World Heritage List for fifteen years now,” Capriles declared.
