MFK: “Prime Minister lied to Parliament and the people of Curaçao!”

schotte1WILLEMSTAD - During a televised press conference, the opposition party MFK and its leader former Prime Minister of Curaçao Gerrit Schotte accused the current Premier Eugene Rhuggenaath of lying to parliament and the people of Curaçao.

According to Schotte, Rhuggenaath lied when he stated three times in Parliament that was not in talks with the Dutch company Shell about a possible take-over of the oil refinery and the petroleum sector in Curaçao.

One of the evidences shown to prove his claim is a kind of plan of action and work of Ernst & Young (EY) of September 22, 2017 showing that this consultancy has been used to draw up a contingency plan - the famous Plan B in case the negotiations with the Chinese Guangdong Zhenrong Energy (GZE) would come to nothing.

One of the points included in this plan of action is the involvement of the Netherlands in this process, which is important for the economy of the island. But what is noteworthy in this section of the report is “the possible support of Royal Dutch Shell”. The report indicates that the Shell can be involved if needed.

In a reaction, the Prime Minister of Curaçao said that the report presented by Ernst & Young to him and the Chairman of the Multidisciplinary Project Team, Clift Christiaan in connection with the modernization of the refinery have never been approved.

“The impression is now being made that I have withheld documents. But it was a report from Ernst & Young that have never been approved,” says Premier Rhuggenaath. The government is going to launch a new public tender for the choice of a consultancy firm with industrial expertise.

Premier Rhuggenaath stressed that time is short. The contract with the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA is coming to an end. “Right now we are looking for the best candidate. “Imagine that Shell is still interested in the modernization of the refinery, that indication is not there now, and then comes out best after a transparent process, then we choose Shell.”
