Militaries prosecuted for death navy diver

gvo-091127-001WILLEMSTAD - Three soldiers are being prosecuted for a diving accident in which a marine diver died in November 2015. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), they violated service regulations that could create a life-threatening situation.

The diving accident happened on the island. The victim was the 23-year-old Mandy Groenewoud, who made a dive of forty meters deep. During the dive, she indicated to her colleagues that there was water in her diving mask, shortly after that the communication was lost and the divers were dependent on the so-called signal line.

The OM says that the diving exercise should have been canceled according to protocol when the communication failed. The three then also had insufficient contact with the victim.

The suspects all work at the Royal Navy. They are a 49-year-old woman, a man of 51 and a man of 44.
