Minister Jardim: Curacao’s financial problems are getting worse

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Finance, Mr. Jose Jardim gave a presentation in parliament on November 15 on the liquidity of the island. The prospects are not good according  to Jardim: without the right measures the government will camp with liquidity problems next year . This news came as a shock for the members of parliament.

The liquidity position of Curaçao was in September fell to 250 million guilders, while the island on 10-10-10 still started with a liquidity of 408 million. Liquidity is 173 million this week. Jardim expects that this will decrease with another 20 million at the end of the year. The Minister made it a step further: if the items contained in the instructions from the Kingdom Council of Ministers are not used, there will be no salaries for civil servants in April 2013.

Demissionary Prime Minister Stanley Betrian was also present during the presentation. He stressed on the members of parliament to take action quickly. These measures could mean a blow for the social problems and also for the unemployment, but they are necessary to fix the financial problems of the island.
