Minor earthquake – Curacao on June 3, 2013

Possibility for Tsunami excluded

At around 8:55 this morning there was an light earthquake in the Caribbean Sea. This earthquake was also felt in some parts of Curacao.

Data received by the Meteorological Serviced indicate that the earthquake was at the bottom of the ocean at 1.9 kilometers with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was at 12.16 degrees north and 68.87 degree west, which locates it at Ronde Klip Curacao.

Based on the data and historical facts, a destructive tsunami is not possible for the islands in the Caribbean sea.

Reports:

  • Curacao, Dutch Caribbean - Heard a boom and everthing started shaking for like 3 seconds.
  • Souax - a Couple of glasses broke in my kitchen
  • MARCHENA - A WEAK EXPERIENCE
  • Willemstad - Was sitting in my office on the third floor of a building which is atop a hill, felt my desk shaking for a good 3-5 seconds. Thought maybe there was an explosion somewhere the shook the building.
  • Willemstad Parera area - Felt the desk in the office shaking and heard tinkling noise, at first I thought it was the construction next to us, but it was too strong for that.
  • Salina/Willemstad - I was in the office and could cleary feel what I thought was an earthquake. Other's thought of heavy winds or a dumptruck passing by.
  • willemstad curacao - Felt the ground start shaking (I'm on the second floor). Thought first it was heavy traffic outside of the building. Then realized it was an earthquake. First on in my lifetime.
  • Brievengat - it was my first time feeling it, very weird and scary
