New Navy ship Zr.Ms. Zealand enters Willemstad
WILLEMSTAD – The new station ship in the Caribbean, Zr.Ms. Zealand, arrived this morning at 9 am local time in Willemstad.
The ship was ceremonially welcomed and will be in Curaçao for the next 4 months to perform coast guard tasks and combat drugs. Traditionally, the ship fired 21 gun shots in honor of the governor of Curaçao.
This honor was answered by a 21 gun salute from Fort Amsterdam to welcome the ship and its crew. Then the Zealand ceremonially entered the St. Anna Bay.
Zeeland is used for its second four months’ time as the 'ship in the West' to intercept drug shipments and to support the Coast Guard. In addition, the ship and its crew may assist in case of a hurricane disaster.
