Oil refinery responsible for oil pollution Jan Kok
WILLEMSTAD – The Isla oil refinery must pay about 40 thousand dollars for the cleaning of the saliña Jan Kok, which is a popular flamingo spotting area. The refinery is responsible for the oil spill in August 2012.
This was the ruling of the Court of Justice yesterday. The Court of First Instance finds it proven that the oil that ended up in the saliña came from an oil spill at the terminal in Bullenbaai. The valve of one of the tanks was left open. Initially it was reported that it was closed, but this was proven to be incorrect.
The lawsuit against the oil refinery was filed by the Heritage Foundation and Sea Shore Properties. The amount is the cost incurred the cleaning of the area, but also the investigation into the damage the oil spill caused.
There is also a fine of half million guilders if this happens again,
