Pesticide against Chikungunya in neighborhoods

ChikungunyaWILLEMSTAD - Technical and Hygienic Affairs (THZ) of the Implementing Organization G&GZ (formerly Health Department) will use a special exterminator truck to spray in the following neighborhoods, Suffisant, Muizenberg Nobo and Steenen Koraal. This is will be from 17:30 to 20:30.

The G&GZ advises residents to close doors and windows and to keep pets inside up to fifteen minutes after spraying to avoid inhaling the pesticide pets.

Everything now points that there are more than nine people on Curaçao infected with the Chikungunya virus. Test results which were negative first, turn to be positive now. Further studies should demonstrate whether the virus has increased in Curaçao or in the region, according to Sirving Keli, Sector Director Health.

Research shows that Chikungunya prevails in the neighborhoods where the Department will spray. "One should make sure not to be stung by mosquitoes. Personal measures should focus on avoiding mosquito bites by using sprays, insect repellent against mosquitoes and rackets.

Stagnant water is the greatest danger of contracting Chikungunya. Abate is a product which can be thrown into the water and avoid mosquito bites. This product can be collected for free at the G&GZ in Zaquito.

Symptoms of Chikungunya include joint pain, headache, rash and high fever. There are no medication or vaccines for viral disease. When in pain, it is advised to take analgesics.
