Plaza Hotel will be auctioned

Plaza HotelWILLEMSTAD - The Plaza Hotel Curaçao & Casino will be auctioned.

The Giro Bank instructed notary Igor Naaldijk to prepare and implement the auction of the once leading hotel in Punda. Earlier, conversations were still held with potential buyers, but these continued to decline because of the million debt that the hotel has to creditors.

This includes the Social Insurance Bank (SVB), the utility company Aqualectra and the Giro Bank, where the hotel has its mortgage. The management of the Plaza hotel has received several official requests to meet the outstanding debt, but they did not respond to it. Last Tuesday, Aqualectra went on to close the hotel's electricity and water supply.

An unknown number of guests from the hotel were told on Tuesday morning that they had to pack their suitcases and that they will be taken to another hotel. This was done in consultation with the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB). Interim director Hugo Clarinda did not want to say how many guests there were and what they were offered to compensate for the inconvenience.

The Giro Bank arranged surveillance on Tuesday to prevent unauthorized people from entering the hotel.
