Possible general strike if agreement union and contractors oil refinery fails
WILLEMSTAD – The union representing the contract employees of the oil refinery, SGTK failed to reach an agreement with the contractor association AAV during the weekend. The meetings were led by the government mediator Randolph Gijsbertha.
The negotiations were suspended when protesters disrupted the meeting. According to former trade unionist Eroll Cova, who is now also involved in the negotiations, the representatives of the AAV did not feel safe. The chairman of the association was escorted by police for his safety.
The meetings continued on Saturday, but the parties did not reach any agreement. The union demands a lump sum of 2,000 guilders per contract worker who works at the refinery, but the contractors indicated that this is unacceptable.
In the afternoon all the unions on the island came together to discuss possible steps. The worst case could be a general strike today. The unions have not yet announced what exactly they will do. Errol Cova is now leading the entire action.
The Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro has extended the ban on assembly at the entrances of the oil refinery and Fort Amsterdam until September 18.
