Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao starts crowdfunding

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWILLEMSTAD - Sea Turtle Conservation Curaçao (STCC) wants to investigate the turtle disease that was discovered in January at nine different locations in the Curaçao waters. In order to do this, the organization needs money quickly.

STCC has therefore started a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of raising 50,000 dollars. A tenth of this will first be used for the purchase of the necessary materials for the research. Subsequently, the costs for each survey will be around $ 20,000. Nine locations are surveyed by a team of around sixteen people per survey and the organization prefers to do this every quarter, to keep a close eye on developments.

STCC previously examined five locations annually.

The research conducted last January found that more than half of the sea turtles at Wacawa, on the north coast of the island, are infected with fibropapillomatosis. That is a kind of herpes virus that manifests itself in the form of 'cauliflower-like tumors' on the vital parts of the animal. Many sick turtles were also found at Ascencion. The sudden emergence of this disease leads to worries and must therefore be investigated quickly, according to STCC director Sabine Berendse.
