Settlement OM and Refinery on oil leak
WILLEMSTAD – The oil refinery Isla has reached a settlement with the Public Prosecutor (OM) in the case of the oil spill in Jan Kok in August 2012. This is according to the Chief Prosecutor.
The main points of the agreement consist of a package of technical measures and a tightening of procedures to reduce the risk of an oil leak in the future and limit its damage.
Also, there should be a dam or lock between the saliña (salt flats) at Jan Kok and the open water, the pipes at Bullenbaai must be replaced, and there will be a new alarm and signaling system in that area.
Furthermore the oil refinery must have vacuum trucks ready at Bullenbaai at all times so that in case of overload this can be used to immediately absorb the oil.
