Situation in prison is ‘uncontrollable’

prisonWILLEMSTAD – The situation in the prison on Curaçao is 'out of control'. In mid May the Progress Committee Curaçao had sent a letter sentto Prime Minister, Daniel Hodge and the Dutch Minister Ronald Plasterk of Kingdom Relations about the prison.

The Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro is currently working on a task force to find a solution to the problem. This is according to Minister Plasterk. The letter indicated that all critical and important functions have long been vacant and that the current situation is that the personnel and the prisoners are trying to take over the prison. “The risk for a disaster is therefore extremely high. This provides a very high risk for the Government of Curaçao,” according to the Progress Committee.

The situation can be improved according to the committee, only if the human and financial conditions change. Otherwise, there will be 'catastrophic consequences'.
