Students on their way to a new life journey

StudentsWILLEMSTAD – 248 students from Curaçao left for the Netherlands to continue with their education. The flight was a bit delayed due to some weather issues in Amsterdam, but the students were ready to embark on their new journey.

The number of departing students has been on a steady decline in recent years. In 2012, 297 left with a scholarship to the Netherlands. In 2013, this fell to 263.

Sun, sea and family are the things that the young will miss the most. The idea of a real winter in the Netherlands for them is something they would rather not think about. "I have bought coats and thick sweaters," says Terrence (17) who goes to a college in Rotterdam. "They come in boxes to the Netherlands so I hope they're on time."

Many young people move from their parents' home straight to a private home in the Netherlands. A big change, but most are looking forward to it. But they are confident that they will make it. Most of them indicated that they are very independent.

Curacao Chronicle wishes them all the best.
